A kitchen remodel is a big investment, and the contractor you pick matters more than any single material choice. Here is something I tell people up front: a good contractor welcomes hard questions. The ones who get cagey when you ask about licenses, references, or what is in the estimate are telling you something.

Are You Licensed and Insured, and Can You Prove It?

This is the first filter. In Massachusetts, your contractor should hold a current Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) registration and carry general liability insurance and workers’ compensation. That insurance protects you if someone gets hurt or something gets damaged on your property.

How to check: ask for the HIC registration number and look it up through the state, and ask for current insurance certificates. A contractor on solid ground hands these over without hesitation. If someone dodges this question, stop there.

Can I See Real Kitchens You Have Done, and Talk to Those Clients?

Photos are a start. References are better. Ask for recent local projects, then actually call the homeowners. Ask them whether the job finished on time, whether the price held, and whether the contractor stayed in touch the whole way.

Who Will Actually Be Running My Project?

This one matters more than people expect. At a lot of companies, the person who sells you the job is not the person who runs it, and you end up chasing a crew for updates. Ask who your point of contact is from start to finish.

How Do You Handle Pricing and Estimates?

Ask for a detailed written estimate that spells out the scope, not a number scribbled on the back of a card. Ask how the payment schedule works, and make sure it lines up with real progress on the job.

What Is Your Timeline, and What Happens When Something Comes Up?

Ask for a realistic start and finish date with a few milestones along the way. Then ask how they handle surprises, because older North Shore homes tend to have them. Old wiring, settled framing, and plumbing that needs rerouting can show up once the walls are open.

The answer you want is simple: a contractor who plans for it and tells you before it becomes a problem, not after. I keep you updated the whole way, so nothing lands as a shock.

What Do You Warranty, and Is It in Writing?

Do not assume anything here. Ask exactly what the contractor stands behind, on both labor and materials, and for how long. Then make sure that coverage is written into the contract, not just promised out loud. A clear written warranty is a sign a contractor takes the work seriously and expects to stand by it.

Red Flags to Watch For

A few warning signs that should give you pause:

  • Cannot produce a license or proof of insurance
  • Pushes you to sign fast or pay a large amount up front
  • Hands you a vague estimate with no breakdown
  • Is slow to respond or hard to reach before you have even hired them
  • Will not give you references

How a contractor treats you before you sign is usually how they will treat you during the job.
